Compact bone, polarised light micrograph. The longitudinally sectioned osteons show bony lamellae arranged in parallel to a Haversian duct, occupied by a small blood vessel. Between the bony lamellae are the somata of the osteocytes (small elongated dark structures). Joining the Haversian ducts of some osteons with others are the Volkmann ducts.
