Fluorescence micrograph of the thallus of a liverwort (Conocephalum conicum). The thallus is composed of few layers of cells with different functions. The dorsal epidermis has small pores that help in gaseous exchange. Under the epidermis is a layer of chlorophyll-rich cells. This layer appears red due to chlorophyll autofluorescence. Beneath this is a layer of storage cells. Observed in ultraviolet (UV) light. Magnification: x166 when printed at 10 x 10 cm. | |
