Illustration of the small molecule inhibitor (s)-5 (black) bound to prenyl-binding protein PDE6D (phosphodiesterase 6 delta, pink). Inhibition of PDE6D prevents it binding to and activating the KRAS oncogene product. Activation of KRAS promotes cell growth and proliferation. Mutations in KRAS lead to cancer, the uncontrolled growth and proliferation of cells. Therefore, inhibitors of PDE6D are being investigated as anticancer drugs.
