Small wasp head. Stacked macrophotograph of the head of a small wasp. The wasps are a cosmopolitan paraphyletic grouping of hundreds of thousands of species. Wasps are social insects. They raise their young in paper nests made of chewed-up wood pulp and feed on insects and carrion. This high protein meat is also fed to the larvae. The image shows the head with one of the compound eyes, the antennae and the proboscis (tongue made of fused labial glossae). | |
