Differential interference contrast (DIC) light micrograph of a flat green alga Coleochaete scutata. It lives attached to other algae, water plants and flat rocks. Coleochaete are seen as one of two most probable sister groups to land plant species. Coleochaete scutata have distinctive sheathed hairs (setae) that grow at the top of their cells. The hair sheaths have thick walls and the length of the narrow sheath are many times longer than the cells. Despite what is apparently a considerable amount of resources and energy involved in making these complex hairs, their function is not known. Magnification: x425 when printed at 10 centimetres wide at its longest edge. | |
