Erythrodermic atopic dermatitis on the ankles of an African American girl. Atopic dermatitis, also called atopic eczema, is an inflammatory skin reaction that occurs without any obvious external cause. Erythrodermic dermatitis occurs when the rash becomes very widespread, leading to reddened, scaly, thickened patches of skin. It can be treated with soothing ointments and corticosteroid drugs.
