Nu2 Lupi planetary system. Illustration of three planets, designated b, c and d, orbiting the star Nu2 Lupi (which is designated A). This planetary system lies around 48 light years from Earth in the constellation Lupus. Nu2 Lupi is a G-type main sequence star, the same as the Sun, but is considerably older than the Sun at approximately 12.3 billion years. The inner planet is a rocky super-Earth, while the outer two planets appear to be surrounded by envelopes of gas and to hold large amounts of water. The planets orbit relatively close to their star, so their water would be in the form of high-pressure ice or high-temperature steam rather than liquid. | |
