Scurvy in a 33 year old African American male with undetectable levels of vitamin C. Scurvy is a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Symptoms include swollen and bleeding gums, bruising of the skin and the opening of previously healed wounds. A prolonged deficiency may cause death. Scurvy responds to treatment with vitamin C. | |
