Steel thimble with needle. A thimble is used to protect the finger when sewing. Normally worn on the middle finger, it can painlessly push the needle through stiff fabric. They come in various sizes to fit the finger. The dimples prevent the needle from slipping once it has made contact. 2, 200 years ago metal thimbles were used in China. Found as early as the 10th century in England, there is no proof that the Greeks or Romans used metal thimbles. This is a practical thimble but some are so attractive that they are collectibles. | |
