Reduction of copper, 1 of 4. Zinc metal (Zn) and black copper(II) oxide (CuO) powders are mixed in a stoichiometric ratio. The mixture is poured along a line onto a tile. Bunsen burner is then used to ignite the mixture from one end. The reaction proceeds, generating its own heat. Copper metal (Cu) and zinc oxide (ZnO) are the products of this exothermic single-displacement reaction: CuO + Zn -> Cu + ZnO. | |
