Van de Graaff generator. A Van de Graaff generator uses a moving belt and the triboelectric effect to accumulate electric charges on a hollow metal globe and create very high electric potentials. When a grounded ball is brought close to the charged globe, the air between them undergoes electrical breakdown and ionization, resulting in visible corona discharge sparks. Many sparks are recorded in this long-exposure photograph. | |
