Lenz's law demonstration, 2 of 2. Lenz's law is demonstrated using two metal hoops (one open and one closed) that are balanced by and can freely rotate around a centrally mounted pin. Lenz's law states that the current induced in a closed loop due to the change in the magnetic flux through the loop is directed to oppose the change in flux, thus exerting a mechanical force which opposes the motion. Photo 1: when the magnet is moved away from the closed hoop, the flux through the hoop decreases. As a result, the hoop moves towards the magnet. Photo 2: when the same experiment is repeated with the open hoop, the hoop does not move as induced circular current can not flow. | |
