Portrait of Emin Pasha (1840-1892). Born Eduard Schnitzer in Germany, Emin Pasha later became an Ottoman doctor and travelled across Africa. Pasha greatly added to the European knowledge of African languages. In 1878, he was appointed as governor of the Egyptian province of Equatoria, now in present-day South Sudan. | |
