Coloured frontal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) angiogram of the abdominal aorta, kidneys and the iliac arteries of a 70-year-old female patient with arterial hypertension. The MRI shows aneurysmal dilation of the renal aorta (lower centre) and the iliac arteries (bottom). An aneurysm is a blood-filled dilation in a blood vessel wall. If left untreated, the blood vessel can rupture. Risk factors for aneurysm include smoking, high blood pressure, infection and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). | |
