Calcium concretions in habenular commissure, light micrograph. The deposit of calcium in the form of calcium concretions that occurs with age is not limited to the pineal gland but is often accompanied by calcifications in the commissural region neighbouring the root of the gland. Curiously, the commissural calcification is usually limited exclusively to the habenular commissure, while the neighbouring posterior commissure is usually undamaged. Clearly visible between the two commissures is the pineal recess lined by ependymal cells. | |
