The pair of electron storage rings at Stanford, California, were commissioned in 1965. They formed the first colliding-beam accelerator to carry out a program of experiments. The picture shows one of the storage rings, composed of 4 magnet arcs encircling the rectangular structure. Electrons in one ring collided head-on with electrons in the other ring at a point near the top centre of the picture, where the rings shared a common straight section. Spark chambers recorded the tracks of particles created in the collisions. The pipes & the curved magnet in the foreground are part of the system that fed electrons to the rings. | |
