Combined heat and power. View of multicoloured piping in a combined heat and power (CHP) plant, used to route steam to various end users. CHP plants are designed to make the best use of the thermal energy from the combustion of fuel. The steam heated to drive turbine generators (producing electricity) is passed through heat exchangers to heat water for domestic use. The hot exhaust gasses from the combustion are also used to heat domestic water. This means that nearby houses and offices do not need their own water boilers for space heating systems.
