ALMA image showing the ongoing formation of the PDS 70 system, 400 light years away from Earth in the constellation Centaurus. At the centre of the system, lies a young star (central circle) orbited by at least two planets: PDS 7b (not shown) and PDS 7c. There is a circumplanetary disc surrounding PDS 7c (dot to the right of centre). PDS 7c uses material from this circumplanetary disc to grow and form moons. Both planets have carved a cavity in the circumstellar disc (main ring structure) by using its material to grow in size. | |
