19th century illustration showing an aerial view of the crescent-shaped island of Deshima in Nagasaki Bay, Japan. The artificial island was originally built as a trading post for Portuguese traders in 1634. It later became a Dutch trading post during the Edo Period when foreigners were not allowed to enter Japan. From 1641 to 1859, the Dutch were the only Europeans allowed to trade with Japan. Painting by Japanese artist Kawahara Keiga c. 1833-1836. | |
