Atahualpa (1497 - 1533) was the last sovereign emperor of the Inca Empire. During the Spanish conquest, Pizarro captured Atahualpa and used him to control the Inca empire. Fearing rebellion, Pizarro staged a mock trial and Atahualpa was sentenced to burn at the stake. He agreed to convert to Catholicism, but he was betrayed and strangled with a garrote. | |
