Earthquakes are produced when Eartha's surface is shaken by a release of energy from deep inside the planet. Every minute, there is at least one earthquake going on somewhere in the world. Between 5, 000 and 50, 000 of them are felt by local populations every year and many more are recorded by seismologists, the experts that study them. Seismologists use several methods to measure the power of an earthquake. Some take into account the extent of the damage caused, while others, like the famous Richter scale, measure the amount of energy that has been released. Earthquakes in urban areas can be devastating. Since seismologists are not yet able to predict exactly when an earthquake will occur, some cities try to limit damage and prevent accidents by constructing buildings that can withstand vibrations without collapsing. | |
