Caves are underground cavities that have been carved out by natural forces such as water, rain, or waves. They are found in many different places: in cliffs that jut out into the sea, inside glaciers, and even in the hardened lava that covers the slopes of volcanoes. The largest networks of caves are usually found in limestone formations. These caves often have long horizontal galleries, or passageways, with streams or rivers and deep wells or sinkholes. Caves are not just interesting geological formations. They also provide shelter for many kinds of animals, including bats. Numerous caves have already been discovered, but there are still countless more to be found and explored, much to the delight of speleologists, the experts who study them. | |
