Micrasterias alga. Light micrograph, using phase contrast, of the desmid Micrasterias sp.. The desmids are a group of freshwater unicellular green algae characterised by their intricately- shaped cell walls and symmetrical shapes. Micrasterias are part of the placoderm desmids where each cell is divided into two semi-cells joined by the narrow region known as the isthmus (seen at centre). Phase contrast images reduce the colour saturation of objects, allowing finer detail to be seen. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size. | |
