This scene shows an example of the very earliest animals on the ocean floor, 635 to 542 millions of year ago. This was the so-called Ediacaran Period, at the end of the Proterozoic Eon. The creatures in the foreground are Swartpuntia, while Charniodiscus can be seen in the distance. The tree-like Swartpuntia had three to six 'petaloids' (the ones shown here have four) and grew to a height of 12cm to 19cm. | |
