This scene shows an example of the very earliest animals on the ocean floor, 635 to 542 millions of year ago. This was the so-called Ediacaran Period, at the end of the Proterozoic Eon. The creatures in the foreground are Charniodiscus, while Swartpuntia (left) and Cloudina (right) can be seen in the distance. The frond-like Charniodiscus was rooted to the floor in shallow seas and was probably a stationary filter feeder, as are modern sponges, krill, clams and many fish. The holotype (Charniodiscus concentricus Ford 1958) is about 190 mm in length. | |
