Fibroblast growth factor 21, illustration
Illustration of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a hormone secreted by the liver. FG21 stimulates glucose uptake in adipocytes but not in other cell types. Patients with type 2 diabetes have raised levels of FGF21. A variant of the FGF21 gene is also linked to a preference for sweet foods in humans and rodents.
