Pyrolusite is manganese oxide or hydroxide, formed by oxidation of weathered manganese minerals. It is the most common manganese mineral and is an important ore for this metal that is extensively used in steel and other alloys. This sample shows a massive columnar to fibrous habitat in brownish black metallic hues. Sample is from Ilfeld in the German Harz Mountains. Actual length is 45 mm. | |
