Molybdenite (MoS2) is a metallic mineral having hexagonal crystal symmetry. Its habitat ranges from stepped-tabular to more flaky crystals of a very soft nature with a bluish metallic lustre. Both in appearance and texture it resembles graphite. Molybdenite is an ore of molybdenum, an element widely used in all kinds of metallic alloys and products. It is also the only source for the rare radioactive element rhenium. Actual width of specimen is 100 mm, provenance is Arendal in Norway. | |
