Surface of a large polished slab of limestone made up largely of the fossil shells of belemnites. Belemnites are cephalopods, an extinct class of squid-like marine animals. This sizeable trunk is a fossil breccia of belemnites, the apparent result of a mass-extinction event. Recovered from Cretaceous deposits in western Morocco, this slab measures over 100 cm top to bottom. | |
