Comet C/2016 R2 (PanSTARRS), optical image. This long period comet was discovered on 7th September 2016 using the Pan-STARRS telescope. Comets are icy bodies from the outer solar system that boil and form a bright tail of gas and dust as they approach the Sun. C/2016 R2 is a rare blue comet, whose colour is due to it being rich in carbon monoxide. It reached its closest approach to the Sun on 9th May 2018. Photographed in January 2018. | |
