Fingernails of a woman with koilonychia. This disorder results in thin, brittle and concave nails. It is caused by anaemia, a lack of the oxygen-carrying pigment haemoglobin in red blood cells, due to iron deficiency. Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin. Its exact cause is unknown, but it subsides if the anaemia is treated. | |
