Parkinson's disease electrode implants. Coronal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain of a 63-year-old man with Parkinson's disease where electrodes have been implanted (upper centre). Progressive degeneration of the brain's neurons leads to the symptoms of Parkinson's. These symptoms include, tremor, muscular rigidity, poor balance and depression. Here, the patient is being treated using the drug Levodopa, which is no longer effective after six years of use. This neurosurgical treatment involves the implantation of electrodes in deep areas of the brain. This sends electrical impulses to specific areas of the brain, helping to negate and control the effects of the disease.
