3D computed tomography (CT) scan showing the lumbar spine of a 27-year-old patient following a paraglider trauma. A horizontal fracture of the L1 vertebral body is seen without retraction of the posterior wall. This fracture is called a chance fracture. Chance fractures involve all 3 columns of the spine and result from flexion-distraction injuries. They commonly occur at the thoracolumbar junction and often associated with a seat belt injury in car accidents. | |
