Close-up of a hydatidiform mole, or molar pregnancy. This is a rare gestational trophoblastic disease that appears as a mass of swollen chorionic villi growing in clusters that resemble grapes. It is caused by an abnormal egg which has lost its DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), that is fertilized by one or two sperm, so that all of the genetic material is from the father. | |
