Illustration of Italian physicist Alessandro Volta's (1745-1827) wet pile battery in 1800. The battery worked by placing cloths wet in salt water in between zinc and copper plates. This formed a difference in potential, creating an electric current. Published in Collezione dell' opere del Cavaliere Conte Alessandro Volta by Patrizio Comasco (1816). | |
