Souvenir stamps for the Polish high-altitude balloon Gwiazda Polski. The balloon launched on 14th October 1938 with the aim of reaching a record-breaking altitude of 30 kilometres. However, when the balloon was only 30 metres from the ground the hydrogen in it ignited. The fire consumed the balloon, but spared the gondola and the crew of two were unharmed. | |
