Light micrograph of a section through human lung tissue showing pulmonary interstitial emphysema (PIE). This is when air gets trapped in the tissue outside of the tiny air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. It affects newborn babies and is fairly common in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). With adults, smoking is the main cause, other causes being exposure to dust and chemical fumes.
