Light micrograph section through a human liver showing evidence of cirrhosis in Wilson's disease. Cirrhosis is scaring (fibrosis) of the liver caused by long-term liver damage. The scar tissue prevents the liver from working properly. Wilson's disease is a rare genetic disorder characterised by excess copper stored in various parts of the body particularly the liver. Untreated, Wilson's disease can be fatal. Serious complications include cirrhosis as previously mentioned. As liver cells try to make repairs to damage done by the excess copper, scar tissue forms in the liver making it difficult for the liver to function.
