Light micrograph of the marine red alga Polysiphonia stricta. Here a female gametophyte can be seen, the female gametophytes produce the haploid carpogonium, the spherical swelling in the centre of the picture. This remains associated with the female mother plant. The diploid carpospores produced in the carposporangium are immobile when released, they settle and grow into filamentous diploid plants similar to the gametophyte. Microscopic contrast method : Differential interference contrast. Magnification 200x at a print width of 10 cm.
