Illustration of the cosmic web structure of the universe. The illustration was generated by a computer algorithm which used data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey which mapped galaxies within 500 million light-years of Earth. The algorithm produced a three-dimensional map of the cosmic web's filamentary network (purple). The three pairs of inset boxes show some individual galaxies (yellow dots). Next to each galaxy inset box is an illustration of those galaxies with the cosmic web's connecting strands (purple) superimposed on them. | |
