Apollo 13 emergency. Astronaut Jack Swigert with the makeshift carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubber on the Apollo 13 spacecraft. On the way to the moon, an explosion in Apollo 13 deprived the Command Module of power and oxygen reserves. The astronauts used the Lunar Module as a 'liferaft' as it had its own supply of oxygen. Normally, lithium hydroxide cannisters in the Command Module were used to remove CO2 from the air, but with no power these modules failed. NASA controllers devised a system of using the cannisters with the Lunar Module's power, a fan from a space suit, plastic bags and tape; the astronauts then made the device. | |
