Pyrolusite is manganese oxide (MnO2) or hydroxide, formed by oxidation of weathered manganese minerals. It is a common manganese mineral and is an important ore for this metal that is extensively used in steel and other alloys. In this specimen the mineral has precipitated in a dendritic (branchlike) mode on a substrate of limonite, an iron mineral. Actual height of specimen is 84 mm. | |
