Light micrograph section through human tissue showing fibrinoid necrosis of the vessel wall. Fibrinoid necrosis is limited to small blood vessels. Typically it involves small arteries, arterioles and glomeruli affected by autoimmune disease, such as systemic lupus erythematous, or malignant hypertension. Furthermore, fibrinoid necrosis can be described as a pattern of irreversible, uncontrolled cell death that occurs when antigen-antibody complexes are deposited in the walls of blood vessels along with fibrin.
