Structural 3D visualization of a rotavirus. This computer model displays the three layer structure of a rotavirus viral particle. The view is cut out to display the interior of the particle. It was created using UCSF Chimera molecular visualization software. Pentamers are sienna and hexamers (third layer) yellow. The core is magenta and cyan. The second outer layer is green. The spikes are blue and red. Rotaviruses are double stranded RNA (ribonucleic acid) viruses that cause diarrhoeal disease by infecting the small intestine cells. | |
