The White-bellied Spider Monkey, Ateles belzebuth, live in groups that may number as many as 40 plus individuals. They are inhabitants of the Amazon Basin's wet tropical forests, eating fruit and leaves. Owing to deforestation, they are listed on CITES appendix II and by the IUCN red list as endangered. White-bellied Spider Monkeys are preyed upon by large cats, Harpy Eagles, and especially humans, who seek them as food and for the pet trade. This individual was photographed in Amazonian Peru, January 2018. | |
