The Common Stream Lizard (Potamites ecpleopus) looks and lives like a tiny crocodilian. It inhabits forest streams and wet places in the Amazon Basin and it is adept at diving and swimming in order to escape predators. Stream Lizards feed upon small arthropods; Ive watched them dive into stream pools after water striders. Mature males bear a distinctive eye spot in the shoulder region. This individual was photographed in Amazonian Peru, January 2019. | |
