Oxidation of toluene by potassium permanganate, 2 of 2. Violet potassium permanganate(VII) (KMnO4) 0.001M aqueous solution is added to a beaker with toluene (C7H8). Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidising agent. Toluene is a nonpolar aromatic hydrocarbon solvent. The two liquids are immiscible, therefore the reaction occurs only at their interface and thus proceeds slowly, over many hours. Potassium permanganate(VII) is reduced to brown manganese(IV) oxide (MnO2), with possibly some rose-red Mn3+ ions. | |
