Isopods are crustaceans that are related to shrimp and crabs. Isopods of the genus Caecidotea can be common in subterranean waters in North America. In some systems they constitute a significant portion of the total biomass present. A smaller groundwater Isopod, Caecidotea stiladactyla, attains a length of roughly 10mm. It is an obligate groundwater inhabitant and serves as an important member of the food web in the subterranean systems of the southwestern Ozarks. | |
