There are many shrimp living in the depths of the ocean where light does not penetrate. This example (Glyphocrangon sp.) is from a genus of shrimp that lives on or near the sea floor. This genus is comprised of approximately 90 species. In some species, females are larger than males and more common in net samples, from the benthic deep sea community. Some species apparently breed multiple times a year and produce a relatively small number of eggs at any given reproductive event. At least two species were found to have epibranchial bopyrid isopods living on them as parasites. When parasites are present, gonad development in female shrimp of this genus can be retarded. This specimen was trawled from near the sea floor at 1, 300m (4, 265 feet) depth in the Gulf of Mexico, 2018. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project. | |
