Blind lobsters (family Polychelidae) are relatives of true lobsters. The larval stages of blind lobsters are pelagic, living in the water column. As blind lobsters mature, they ultimately sink down to abyssal depths and live their adult lives on the sea floor (members of this family found as deep as 5000 meters). As the common name suggests, they do not have eyes. These individuals were trawled up in the Gulf of Mexico, 2018, from roughly 1, 300 meters depth. Image courtesy of the DEEPEND project. | |
